  • Events Calendar

    Brazilian GP

Rio de Janeiro - March 23rd

The 1986 Formula One season kicks off in Brazil at the Jacarapagua track near Rio de Janeiro. After preparing over the winter each team will be looking for a good start to the season.

    Spanish GP

    Jerez - April 13th

After a five year absence Formula One returns to Spain at the new purpose built modern Jerez circuit. With no previous data to work on, the initial drive for all teams is to develop a good setup.

    San Marino GP

    Imola - April 27th

Back to familiar territory, there is lot's of support for the Italian teams here, no more so than for Ferrari.

    Monaco GP

    Monte Carlo - May 11th

The famous street circuit is the toughest race on the season, and many drivers consider a win here almost as great as a championship victory.

    Belgian GP

    Spa Francorchamps - May 25th

One of the drivers favourite circuits. A long track takes time to learn and its high speed and challenging corners can catch out rookie drivers. Most notable of all is the weather, which can change very quickly often with thrilling results.

    Canadian GP

    Montreal - June 15th

The 8th Grand Prix race at Montreal. An unusual circuit, part street circuit, part road course, some slow fiddly corners and some very high speed straights. Turn one is the scene of many dramas.

    United States GP East

    Detroit - June 22nd

A street circuit, Detroit is the ideal location for a GP race in the United States. This is the 4th race at this venue.

    French GP

    Paul Ricard - July 6th

A classic circuit loved by many, a variety of corners - some of which can bite - is complemented by a very long straight.

    British GP

    Brands Hatch - July 13th

The last race at Brands Hatch, for next year GP continues in Britain at Silverstone. Brands is a natural amphitheatre and a spectators delight, whilst the track itself features undulating terrain of various elevations and a variety of corners.

    German GP

    Hockenheim - July 27th

A fabulous fast track through the forest, a sequence of straights punctuated by chicanes. Some claim the venue lacks character, though few can argue with the impressive stadium complex.

    Hungarian GP

    Hungaroring - August 10th

Formula One visits the Eastern bloc for the first time! Much hype for this event with the cold war still strong, people other than just Formula One fans will be watching this event with interest. The track itself is quite narrow and an absence of straights may make this circuit tricky to overtake on.

    Austrian GP

    Osterreichring - August 17th

Set in fantastic mountainous countryside, this is a fast track with many elevation changes. The first corner is a spectator favourite.

    Italian GP

    Monza - September 7th

The famous Italian track, and very high speed favouring the more powerful cars - the Italian teams will be looking to feed off home support and get a good result.

    Portuguese GP

    Estoril - September 21st

Estoril is a challenging circuit loved by the drivers, a number of up and down sweeps through rocky terrain with a number of overtaking opportunities.

    Mexican GP

    Mexico City - October 12th

An unwelcoming track, with a fearsome final corner and a bumpy surface not helped by regular earthquakes. Even men and machines have to adapt as the circuit is located at 7400ft.

    Australian GP

    Adelaide - October 26th

Australia's second ever Grand Prix, a well organised event set at a street circuit around the Victoria Park horse racing facility. The track is unusual for a street circuit in that it features very high speeds and a number of fast kinks.

    Classic 86 Racing Strategy Game

This is a player-developed carset. Much of the research, graphics, data and track maps has been provided by BATracer player Tim Finnigan.

    Points

    1st - 9
    2nd - 6
    3rd - 4
    4th - 3
    5th - 2
    6th - 1

The shortage of points paying positions, and the large number of entrants make points very precious and mistakes costly. For many of the lower teams, scoring a point is like winning the championship!

    Special Notes and Hints

All teams have two cars, there are no single car teams. Likewise, the tiny AGS team also makes an appearance, despite only running at Monza during 1986.

There is no refuelling permitted, and no safety cars. Because the races consist of full Grand Prix distances this allows the field to become quite spread out and many cars will be several laps down by race end. This puts great emphasis on getting a good setup.

The 1986 season was very demanding on cars, with many retiring with engine failures - particulary on high speed circuits where much of the lap is full throttle.

The championship victor will regulary need a good setup, though there is still room to get results with a decent strategy. However, making the car last the distance is as important as being the fastest.

Special super-fast qualifying tyres are provided and should be used to conserve regular sets intended for the race.

    Credits

Pieczar for recreating the new released version of the set and significant efforts with the updated graphics!

    Disclaimer

Though this carset is inspired by high level single seater racing, no actual real life teams, cars or intellectual property is included.
