    Indy 500 Racing Strategy Game

This is a new one for BATracer - a single race played across several days - allowing for the very first time the ability to modify settings and strategy during the race.

It is recommended you play through the original 2008 Indycar carset first, which this series is based on. This will give you adequate background experience with the cars and competing on ovals.

This is a generic carset, so does not follow perfectly the 2008 Indy race. All 37 cars make the race, and players are offered a selection of different compounds to use during the race. For obvious reasons there is obviously no home race selection for this game type.

There are no retirements in this public game. World ranking cannot be built up with this event. But this classic race represents a big challenge - only one driver can win: 36 will lose!

    Order of Play

The 200 lap Indy 500 is divided into 5 stages of 40 laps each. The opening stage is the same as a standard race - you qualify as normal then prepare for the start of the race itself. You don't get many practice laps initially - you will be able to further hone your setup as the race unfolds with the aim of most drivers have a perfect setup by the final stage of the race. This reflects the very nature of lengthy oval races. When you run a "practice" lap you cannot change your tyre as you would normally, since you are on the race tyre. You are actually not running any additional laps when you run a lap, so amongst other things you do not incur tyre wear or crash.

After each stage you can adjust strategy. You are shown how many laps of fuel are presently in the tank - this is very important as it is possible to run out of fuel. Since you cannot retire, you will instead make your way very slowly back to the pits.

Accidents and breakdowns will become more common towards the end of this mammouth race as component fatigue and driver stamina become bigger factors.

Points are awarded (1 point per place) but merely to order the standings page in the same order as the race order from the current stage. At the start of each stage the points are then reset.

    Race Strategy - Special Note

You will maintain your race strategy across the entire 200 laps of the race. However, later on you can trim this down to just laps which will occur in the future, or leave as is.

The important thing is that if you make a reactionary pitstop your own race strategy will not change - it's up to you to take into account the situation with your fuel and tyres after each stage. You can of course disable your reactionary pitstops or set lower values than you would normally had it been a fully autominous race and turn this to your advantage.

    Quirks

Since BATracer was designed around each race being a separate event, it has been quite a task to get the stage in this game type to run as a single race. Whilst it is mostly seemless there are a number of small quirks.

  • Fastest laps only apply for the stage of the race, not the entire race.
  • The standings comparison pages treat each stage as a separate race, thus providing statistics for wins, fastest laps and podiums. This information is largely useless save for the interest of seeing which drivers "won" each stage or were quickest in each stage, etc.
  • The team championship page is largely redundant, but might be of interest to some players - combining the points based on finishing position. Again, the points are not cumulative. The team page also shows "wins" and "podiums" from each stage as above.

    Credits

This carset was based on the original 2008 Indycar carset concept submitted by Philip Chandler. The original carset called for the Indy race to be ran as a special event where additional players would join the game for Indy 500 only. This was considered impractical, but the Devs decided it would be nice to incorporate some of the additional cars and liveries so eventually this offshoot was born introducing multi-stage single-races to BATracer for the first time.

The original 2008 Indycar carset credits:

    A product of Rob's Workshop.

Template and almost everything for the liveries - James Broomhead

A few other liveries - Oscar Garcia

Shading and highlight layer - Matt Capper

A few track maps - Rob Baker

A few other track maps, general research and applying the IndyCar series to the game - Philip Chandler

Special mentions to Ron Campbell, Yuuji Kawasie, Andrew Grigg, Kalvin Filarski, Jake Roberts and Ash Hodge, who all helped in their own way (most of them probably don't even know that they did).
