Champion Cars v2.0 Racing Manager Game

Champion Cars v2.0 runs in the BATracer game engine.

This is an updated edition of the original carset, but with updated car and track graphics and a full complement of '95 liveries. Miami and Indianapolis are now also included! Based around the classic PC game Indycar Racing 2.

Cars

Loller

Low drag and optimised for fast corners, but not well balanced at lower speeds.

Peskie

Buffeting and general instability at high speed mask an otherwise good performer.

Kaynard

Consistent and solid performance despite comparative extra weight and drag.

Engines

Ffordd

Best overall engine but statistically most prone to failures.

Mernandez

Poor top end power performance but good torque. Exceptionally reliable.

Hinda

Most powerful but heavy, good reliability.

Tyres

Greatyear

  • Dry Soft - Regular tyre
  • Dry Medium - Regular tyre
  • Dry Hard - Regular tyre
  • Wet - Wet weather tyre

  • Firebug

  • Events Calendar

    Bicentennial Park

    Miami - 5th March

Temporary street track located on Biscayne Bay. It was used before ChampCar moved to the oval at Homestead.

    Surfers Paradise

    Australia - 19th March

This is the only event outside of North America. A fast street circuit, mainly consisting of long straights joined by chicanes which can catch out the unwary. Narrow and can bite if you lose concentration.

    Phoenix International Raceway

    Arizona - 2nd April

A very tough short oval with limited space off the groove, the corners vary both in angle and banking. The hot Arizonian desert adds a further challenge. A pleasure to fast lap on, but can be a miserable venue if you go into the race with a poor setup.

    Long Beach Street Circuit

    California - 9th April

A venerable event - flat and fast for a street circuit. Popular with the drivers, over taking opportunities present themselves at the end of long straights or into the final hairpin .

    Nazareth Speedway

    Pennsylvania - 23rd April

A tri-oval, but because each corner has a different radius and banking it's more like a 4 or 5 corner circuit. The layout calls for a lane for exiting and leaving the pits that covers almost an entire lap.

    Indianapolis Motor Speedway

    Indianapolis, Indiana - 28th May

The Brickyard is one of the most famous tracks in the world. Built in 1909 from 3.2 million bricks (thus giving the track its popular nickname). The circuit is nearly rectangular oval essentially unchanged since its inception. Important: This event uses aggregate qualifying - the sum of all 4 of your qualifying laps!

    Milwaukee Mile

    Wisconsin - 4th June

Originally a dirt track for horse racing, fortunatly a concrete surface has now been provided for champ cars. 9 degree banking and deceptivly easy.

    Belle Isle Park

    Detroit, Michigan - 11th June

A twisty tight course, requiring huge skill and also a good dose of luck. Located on an island surrounded by the Detroit River. Passing is possible with considerable aggression, but collisions usually result in a retirement.

    Portland International Raceway

    Oregon - 25th June

This cracking road course features a classic pit and back straight linked by some challenging corners. A chicane at the end of the main straight can cause problems on race starts and restarts.

    Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - 9th July

The longest course in the championship, a fast circuit with several elevation changes. A real challenge to the drivers - it is very satisfying to win here. Developing a setup that is good for a race distance can be tricky.

    Exhibition Place Toronto

    Toronto, Canada - 16th July

A moderatly quick street course with hairpins, the first of the Canadian venues. The main overtaking points centre around the turn one hairpin and the tight bend after the long drive down Lakeshore Boulevard.

    Burke Lakefront Airport

    Cleveland, Ohio - 23rd July

An airfield circuit and the fastest "road" course on the calendar, the track is a fully functioning airport throughout the rest of the year. The high speed corners can cause tyre over heating.

    Michigan International Speedway

    Michigan - 30th July

The fastest race track in North America, a key event in the calendar. 18 degree banking and a very wide surface greet competitors for this mamouth 250-lap event. The most significant of the ovals in the championship, a win here is a massive achievement.

    Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

    Lexington, Ohio - 13th August

Hairpins and elevation changes make this one of the toughest courses on the calendar. Blind corners catch out the unwary. A good setup is essential.

    New Hampshire International Speedway

Loudon, New Hampshire - 20th August

A modern facility with three wide racing, but narrow corners banked at 12 degrees. The last of the ovals in the championship, teams who favour these races will be looking to finish this one highly.

    Pacific Place Vancouver

British Columbia, Canada - 3rd September

Unusually for a street circuit, some of the corners were constructed specifically for the race. This is the second Canadian race, and the penultimate race of the season. Not particulary easy to overtake on.

    Laguna Seca Raceway

    Monterey, California - 10th September

Famous for the fearsome "Corkscrew", the season finale often seems too small a circuit for the large champ cars. Tight initial corners lead to high speed corners with elevation changes. Good luck!

Champion Cars v2.0 Racing Strategy Game

    Credits

This is an update of the original carset put together by the BATracer developers. The update was done by Mariusz Pieczar (templates, shading, liveries and tracks) with help from Jef Beyens (liveries) and Shane Van Rooy (RGB-liveries).

Miami and Indianapolis now feature in the season, Indianapolis acting as a championship race on the calendar which you can earn points on.

    Indianapolis Qualifying

This is a 4-lap aggregate system. You must run all 4 laps, one after the other, all on the same tyre. The total lap time from these laps is aggregated into one, which determines your qualifying position. This introduces a new element to qualifying quite removed from the classic banker lap + fast lap(s) strategy which many players adopt. Minor mistakes are more common in this qualifying format - most real world racing drivers rarely drive a "perfect" lap - and this is reflected here spread across your 4 laps. SUccessfull players must now find a good blend between performance and making a clean run. Qualifying ultimatley doesn't make a big difference on a 500 mile oval race but there is still a point up for grabs as well as the prestige of being on pole for the Indy 500 and the fastest driver of the day.

    Nations Cup

An original idea for this carset was a Nations Cup as with real champcar. However, we considered this a worthwhile another idea to propogate to all the other carsets given the international nature of BATracer. We use an average points score per nation to determine ranking within the championship.

    Original Series Info Document

The BATracer Champcars carset is based on the seasons 1995-2005. For posterity, the season calendar is based on the Papyrus game "Indycar Racing 2" - a precursor to Grand Prix Legends!

    Format

For non-oval races, you get two laps to compete for pole. For oval races, you get just one lap.

In champcars there are three types of tracks:

  • Road Course - This is your typical race circuit with grass run off, the occasional gravel trap and armco.
  • Street Circuits - Usually difficult to pass on, and an absence of run off areas can result in a high rate of accidents and retirements.
  • Ovals - 200-250 laps of slipstreaming action - this is where having a good strategy pays off.

    Points

    1st - 20
    2nd - 16
    3rd - 14
    4th - 12
    5th - 10
    6th - 8
    7th - 6
    8th - 5
    9th - 4
    10th - 3
    11th - 2
    12th - 1

    Additional points:

    Pole - 1 point
Most Laps Led - 1 point
    Fastest Laps - 1 point

    Tyres

Unlike some of the other BATracer series, there are THREE different dry compounds to choose from with different durability and grip levels. As you shall see, some of these compounds are unsuitable at certain tracks, or for performing test laps with.

    Stagger / Differential

This series has an additional setup parameter - "Stagger / Differential". Unlike the other parameters, no engineers advice is given. Stagger is used on ovals and essentially makes the car want to continually turn left more easily. Therefore, expect a mid to high setting on oval circuits, and a very low (or zero) value at all other venues.

    Special Notes and Hints

Qualifying order for ovals is almost irrelevant. Instead, oval qualifying forms a special mini-competition to win the point for pole.

Pace cars (safety car) are very common in champcars, particulary on oval racing. Often the field will bunch up.

Of all the major single seater series champcars is highly competitive, full of lot's of overtaking and mishaps. Luck can play a big part, but successfull drivers claim you make your own luck.

Getting consistent results rather than outright wins could secure a championship.

Unlike many of the other BATracer series, it is often not possible to obtain a 100% setup. The perfect setup may lie outside of the range of your sliders. The net result is that from one event to the next teams may have slight advantages / disadvantages over their competitors. If one or more of your sliders are set to their minimum or maximum values - your car may be underperforming slightly. This effect is less common at ovals.
