Set-up Techniques - 8's vs 10's

There are many ways people like to test here and for me the best is the 8 system (I'll go more into that) but others like the 10 system.

Obviously when you test you're trying to narrow down the Lo's and Hi's of your set-up until you eventually have all numbers "spot on".

In this help guide I'm going to compare the 2 ways people often test 8's vs 10's and then you can make up your mind on what you feel is a more efficent way of setting up.

Its just going to be a simulation I've made up. We'll call it front suspension and the engineer says medium.

10's
1. Slider at 50
2. "increase setting" = slider at 60
3. "decrease setting" = slider at 55
4. "decrease setting" = slider at 52
5. "increase setting" = slider at 54
6. "decrease setting" = slider at 53
7. "spot on 53"

Ok so that took us 7 steps (or 5 tests - step one wasn't a test and at step 6 we knew it was spot on) to get a spot on value. Now for the 8's-

8's
1. Slider at 50
2. "increase setting" = slider at 58
3. "decrease setting" = slider at 54
4. "decrease setting" = slider at 52
5. "increase setting" = slider at 53
6. "spot on 53"

Now that only took 4 tests to get that spot on value which can prove crutial if like many carsets there isn't many tests available - and of course not every test brings results to all parameters.

So if you're using GP 2007 and you use the 10's formula to get you values and if you had unlimited tests as well as working on one parameter at a time (ie getting front suspension spot on before moving on to rear suspension and so on - I know it doesnt happen like that - but in theory) it would take an EXTRA 13 TESTS to get a completely spot on set-up compared to using the 8's formula.

This of course a simulation and doesn't factor in anything like random numbers and some people like to move their slider up a large way if it says "increase setting" to achieve smaller barriers, personally not my way but it is an option.

Hoped this has helped you decide on the way you're going to use your tests to their full potential! It could make or break a season!
