Basic guide to GP 2009

This is a simple, general guide to the Formula 1 2009 carset for both Academy players and Pro players. It does not tell you how to win!

The 2009 Formula One Season is promising to be one of the greatest ever, and it also looks to be one of the best carsets ever released on BATracer. With the addition of KERS and race fuel added to qualifying, BATracer has never been so tactical!

Setup
Practice runs pretty much the same as always, with several runs depending on the track. If it's a road circuit, you'll get quite a few runs, however, at a track like Monaco, you will get limited track time. A good setup is essential to get pole or a race win, so a setup characteristic (or a reliable team-mate) will be of great help.

Warm-up, the session before the race has been shortened to just a single run, very much like the 2005 GP carset. This has been done because there is no pre-race warm-up anymore, but a single run will be able to perfect your setup.

Tip: Experimentation at 100 will get the best results for setup, although will greatest risk. Setup traits remove all risk.

Qualifying
Pole position will help in the race, a lot. The Quali Strategy page will allow you to choose which tyres are used in each session. 3 different sets of unused tyres tends to be the best options. The slider allows you to change how fast you go, but the higher the value, the more risk of making an error.

Q1 and Q2 are the 2 knockout sessions, but Q3 introduces the element of race fuel, which is decided on the race strategy page. You can either put in little fuel and set a fast lap, but then you would need to pit in early in the race, and need to overtake more. More fuel will make you slower, but gives you a better chance of making up places come the pit-stop window. 1 lap of fuel onboard is a bad idea, it can, and probably will, cost you a win.

Tip: The 'Pole Sitter King' characteristic allows you to set better times in qualification, as the name would suggest.
Tip 2: The 'Wisdom' characterisitic allows you to set your qualifying sliders up to 100 with no risk of driver errors, or mechanical failures.

Race
There are 2 ways to prepare for the race in the 2009 carset.
1. In you did not make it into Q3, this is where you can make up places by carefully selecting a good strategy. Make some variations and if you're ridiculously far back, try a 1-stop strategy.
2. If you got into Q3, your first pit-stop is fixed, it cannot be changed after quali. Any other pitstops can be changed, so adaptation is required here. Try varations too, to surprise your opponents. Change tyre compounds half way through the race, and you could be on for some serious points.

New to the 2009 GP carset is the highly controversial KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) package which, unlike real life, is available to every single team at the start of the season. In the 'Race Strategy' page, it is possible to activate KERS.

Tip:KERS is heavy, it will make you slightly slower, and it's also another thing that can go wrong with your car. However, it can be used to overtake cars without KERS easier. But, if the car you are trying to pass ALSO has KERS, it will be as hard to pass as not having KERS.

Cars
The car performances are constantly changed to match real-time performance. At the time of writing this (10 April 2009), the Brawn GP is the best, however, later on in the season, this could change, to make the set more realistic. The performance is still close, it is possible to win in a Force India (I nearly did!) and it's possible to be last in a Brawn GP, so setups and upgrades are key to success.
